The weather may not have been in our favour, yet the Darling Harbour Sydney set up for Mt Dew Battle for Supremacy II had Australia’s top 20 skaters amped enough that this set the mood to ensure the day was not dampened.
What had the skaters excited was that the event site was set in one of the country’s most well-known street spots. It’s features amplified through a range of additional structures, including a steep ledge, picnic tables, road barriers, wedges and a double set of stairs.
The up-side is…there will still be a winner of the Sydney Mt Dew Battle for Supremacy, with a re-match event date and location to be announced shortly.

Event #4 of the SbA Dew Series presented by Arnette visited Queensland’s Gold Coast for the first time in the series four year history. Thanks to multimillion dollar investments by the Gold Coast City Council (GCCC), the Gold Coast has become one greatest places to live in Australia if you’re a skater. Upgrades to Nerang, Elanora & Pizzey combined with new sites at Varsity the GCCC are leading the charge in terms of putting the money and resources in to skate facilities. If only more councils could follow the Gold Coasts lead!
Thanks to the GCCC strong commitment to skateboarding SbA was able to relocate the event south from the Sunshine Coast to the world renown Pizzey Park. Fresh from a $1.1 million dollar make over which included new bowls and street sections along with an upgrade to the 90’s street section, Pizzey was once again ready to host some of the best junior skaters in the state.
Continuing with its recent form lines Queensland’s sunshine was replaced with rain and gusty winds that played havoc on 15 years & under division. Ever fearless and frothing to lock in some new lines; rain, hail or shine in the street section the youngest division had kids from as far north as Gympie competing.
The early front runner was Trent Riley who took down the rail with a fine display of variety and seeming less ease, the Caboolture local ended the day in 4th spot but won many a fan with the smooth skills. 3rd was taken out by Southport’s Rakei Garland, Rakei has some off the fastest smooth lines and his local knowledge was evident in the street/ tranny section of the park. That left Mike Mandoza (Reedy Creek) & Mitchell Morrison (Tallebudgera) as the other standouts and most difficult to split for the judges. Mandoza took down the rail with a number of smiths, feeble and crooked grinds to edge out Morrison in a close battle.
15 Years & Under
1st Place – Mike Mandoza
2nd Place – Mitchell Morrison
3rd Place – Rakei Garland
The 18 Years & Under Boys was flooded out with an hour’s rain delay and put a dampener onto proceedings, but the older lads were still keen to skate after the street section was dried out with brooms, blowers and towels. Jonny Clayton (Mudgeeraba) was unlucky to be beaten in the end by James Stuurman (Narangba) as the two skated hard on the slippery and still drying park.
Stuurman was able to handle the going a little smoother with flips and grinds on everything but the highlight was a huge pop shuv on the big bank. Clayton landed a sweet cannon ball over the box along with some fast grinds in the biggest quarter in the park.
18 Years & Under Boys
1st Place – James Stuurman
2nd Place – Johnny Clayton

18 Years & Under Girls Champion – Shanae Collins
The 18 Years & Under Girls saw three girls fighting out for the podium spots and prizes. Sisters Aimee & Ashlee Massie (Varsity) showed family fun can be had whilst competing. Aimee landed a few nice airs and a tuck knee over the spine. However it was Shanae Collins (Nobby’s) that blew everyone away with what could be claimed as the best skating seen in the girls division EVER. Shanae had plenty of technical tricks all over the park but in the end it was her big airs over the spine that got the crowd clapping.
It will be great to see Shanae and Aimme representing Queensland at the Australian finals in April.
1st Place – Shanae Collins
2nd Place – Aimee Massie
3rd Place – Ashlee Massie

18 Years & Under Sponsored – 3rd Place – Cody Shepard
That left the final division of the day to four of the best 18 Years & Under Sponsored skaters in the country, three of them that could also take the podium when they meet in Sydney for the Australian Finals. Three time Queensland champion Jesse Schulkins (Deception Bay), Buggs Fardell (Elanora) & Cody Shepard (Caloundra). Jesse nearly did the skate community a favor, but narrowly missed killing a kid on a scooter with a huge transfer from the bowl section to the street course first attempt. Jesse locked in a few board slides and grinds early in the street section that secured the win. Second went to Buggs who’s fast smooth lines that went for days, with Cody taking out third spot.
Let’s hope these three are all fit and firing for the finals in Sydney as they will destroy the street setup down south.

1st Place – Jesse Schulkins
2nd Place – Buggs Fardell
3rd Place – Cody Shepard

Snowboarding phenom has done it again! In what could be the first ever landed DOUBLE McTWIST 1260 in the half pipe, Shaun White’s bag of tricks continues to get deeper. For those of you not sure what a McTwist is, it’s a combination of a Backside 540 a mute grab and a front flip all in the same movement (or in this case 2 Backside 540’s, 2 front flip’s grabbing MUTE with a 180 rotation out). BOOM!
Skateboarder Mike McGill invented the McTwist in the early 80’s.
With the ever increasing pressure of a repeat GOLD performance at the Vancouver 2010 games, Shaun has mastered yet another insane maneuver to keep all challengers a bay. Check the footy…
P.S. you might want to watch it again… go on, press the play button.
Could this kid get any better? Seriously?

Event #2 of the SbA Dew Series presented by Arnette visited Sydney, NSW over the weekend in stifling heat for the first event of 2010. The event marked the fourth time SbA has hosted the qualify leg of the national series in the Hornsby shire and we were again greeted with road melting heat. The summer sun was relentless all day proving tough going for the younger skaters trying to lock in their lines before the day even started.
Adam Taylor was a special guest on the day, as he cast his eye over the competitors as head judge. The Californian resident was more than happy to take time out and witness the next generation of skate stars. Adam recently finished the 2009 in 6th place for vert in the US Dew Tour. The skaters from as far as the Central Coast to Wollongong who trekked to the north west of Sydney were also joined by local bands Kristen Adams Band & Five Minutes Notice in blistering sun.
The 15 Years & Under Boys was the first division to drop in and as usual the youngest skaters at the park were frothing to get a golden ticket to march’s national final. Making up the largest number of skaters in a division the 15 years & under is always the closest to call and divide the winners.
However it was left to three of the best chasing top spot on the podium, eventually it was Ryan Bowen who claimed the win with no doubt one of the craziest tricks seen so far this summer, a back flip on the fly out. Other standout tricks were Jamie Foxton’s tre flip over the euro and Matt Cornwell’s assault on the bowl.
15 Years & Under
1st Place – Ryan Bowen
2nd Place – Jamie Foxton
3rd Place – Matt Cornwell
The 18 Years & Under Girls saw Bec Andrews and Poppy Olsen showed the crowd that the girls can go as big as some of the guys during their two women final. Bec secured the win with a clean kick flip off the edge of the bowl to flat, not to be out done poppy was popping over the euro gap and even landing some clean early melon grabs in the bowl
18 Years & Under Girls
1st Place – Bec Andrews
2nd Place – Poppy Olsen
The 18 Years & Under Boys was run in the peak the heat and a jam session was the fastest was to ensure the skating was locked, loaded and finished before the two long. In the end it was Anthony Bull’s consistency, style and overall lines that won him top honors, Alex Trot landed a huge kicky board up the rail monster rail.
18 Years & Under
1st Place – Anthony Bull
2nd Place – Dave Q Mark
3rd Place – Alex Trot
That left the final division of the day to four of the best 18 Years & Under Sponsored skaters in the country, three of them lucky to be standing five foot tall. Ryder was looking to defend his state title and the 12 year old from Cronulla was on fire early as he managed to land everything under the sun in the warm up sessions. However it was his eagerness that may have been his undoing with the youngster having and up and under on the platform during the final jam.
In the end Ryder wasn’t to be Ryder’s day, first place and bragging rights went to Julias May. Julias was able to match and in the end better anything that his competitors thru at him. Julias landed two huge tricks on the monster rail, those being a feeble & front board.
18 Years & Under – SPONSORED
1st Place – Julias May
2nd Place – Ryder Lawson
3rd Place – Danni Campbell
Skateboarding Australia would like to thank Hornsby Shire Council for their outstanding support and assistance in bringing the event to the North West of Sydney. Additionally SbA would also like to thank Hornsby Shire Council for organising the two bands Kristen Adams Band & Five Minutes Notice
Special mention also needs to go to Sydney Regional Skateboarders Association (SRSA) for their strong support.
